URC Brown Bag Series: People-First Toolkit: Tools and techniques for prioritizing people in our accessibility practice

Description: In A Web for Everyone, the first principle of Accessible UX is “People First: Designing for differences, where people are the first consideration, and sites are designed with the needs of everyone in the audience in mind.” In practice, accessibility efforts tend to focus on technical and procedural considerations, like complying with policy, conforming to standards, and fixing accessibility bugs. In this session we will explore tools and techniques that promote a people-first approach to accessibility by directing attention toward addressing people’s needs, promoting quality UX, and upholding professional standards.

About Sarah: Sarah Horton is an independent consultant and author of Web Style Guide and A Web for Everyone. Previously, Sarah worked in IT at Yale University, Dartmouth College, and Harvard University. She is currently a member of the research team working on the Teaching Accessibility in the Digital Skill Set study at the University of Southampton.
