Countway Library's Canvas Network course on data management saw over 10,000 new learners enroll since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This posed new challenges for course administration, but also opportunities for large-scale analysis of student demographics and engagement.
In this URC Brown Bag, Kai Fay and Julie Goldman will share their experiences managing the course as it grew from a few dozen new students per month to several thousand new students per month, creating student engagement in a self-paced asynchronous learning environment, and navigating limitations of the online course platform. They will also discuss identifying research questions for analysis and approaches for working with a large dataset.
This session will provide a framework for online learning, course design, and evaluation.

Kai Fey is a Discovery & Access Strategic Projects Manager at Harvard Library. They have also been a TA for the Harvard Medical School Countway Library’s online course Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management since the spring of 2020. Their other interests include information literacy, pedagogy, and student engagement in library instruction.
About Julie Goldman
Julie Goldman is the Countway Research Data Services Librarian with the Harvard Library. She works with students and faculty researchers in the sciences interested in writing data management and sharing plans, and partners with them to plan for the management of their data throughout the lifecycle of their research projects. Julie is Project Manager and Instructor for the Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management course, launched in 2018.
